The anniversary of 9/11 has been filled with sadness, hope and gratitude. Sadness at all the wonderful people lost, hope that something so terrible never happens again and gratitude for all the heroes, heroines and rescue animals that gave their all in the aftermath of this awful tragedy.
This week one of the only 2 remaining rescue dogs that helped after 9/11 returned to NYc to accept the grateful and heartfelt thanks of all New Yorkers.
She’s a Golden Retriever named Bretagne and she brought with her, her Mom and handler Denise Corless, who of course was with her all thew way as she did her 12 hour shifts searching for human remains and comforting firefighters and NYPD officers.
Bretagne was aslo celebrating her 16th birthday, so not only were her NYC hosts saying thank you, they were also wishing her Happty Birthday.
She and her Mom stayed at a swish hotel, went for walks in Central Park, were presented with a ‘Key to the City’ by Hudson River Park officers, were featured on a billboard in Times Square and had a cobblestone dedicated to her and her Mom at the 9/11 museum.
The original dog rescue crew she worked with, the Texas Task Froce 1 and Bretagne were all flown in for a big reunion party. It is wonderful that Bretagne came back to NYc to remind us of all the dedicated help extended to New Yorkers after 9/11. Thank you so very much Bretagne. We can never thank you enough for your help.
