The share economy in New York is slowly changing people’s whole concept of how to make a living.
See this video about how Paul Edelman, a New Yorker, had a great idea about how to help teachers by setting up a platform to help them sell teaching materials to other teachers.
This idea of Paul’s illustrates a central idea of the share economy, how to use what you already have, whether it be professioanl expertise, a spare room, a bike, space in your garden, a car or your time, and then sell it to help you earn dollars.
The growth of the share economy comes at a time when some are finding it hard to pay the rent or pay for college and the entry requirements to money earning opportunities are often steep. For example to own a cab it will cost you $1m for a medallion.
The share economy on the other hand is brim full of opportunities with people selling access to what they own to other people who need whatever it is on a short term basis.
Not all of us can attain the heights of one teacher showcased on the featured video. What she provides is so good she has earned $2 million so far. But an additional $500-$2000 a month for dog minding, working as an UberX driver or renting a room on airbnb, can come in mighty handy. Go share.
