France and America have always had a very special relationship. The symbol of American freedom, the Statue of Liberty which stands in New York harbor was a gift from the French.
And on D Day June 6th 1944 Americans were flying some of the 1,200 planes, were aboard some of the 5,000 vessels and were among the 120,000 troops who set out to liberate France from the Nazis.
American troops landed at Utah beach and Omaha beach and had to fight hard to get a toehold.
But they did and almost 1 1/2 months later Paris was liberated.
On Friday June 6th 2014, France arranged a very special thank you celebration to honor America’s huge part in freeing their homeland 70 years ago. 3 helicopters showered the Statue of Liberty with 1 million rose petals. And onlookers at the base of the statue unfurled an American and a French flag while the national anthems of both countries were played.
Finally there was a 21 gun salute to honor those who fought on D-Day so long ago. May we always remember their heroism and sacrifice.
