It’s Christmas time and of course there’s an “Annie’ to go see, not on Broadway but a new film just out. It’s got to be said the 1982 movie sets a high bar. And it has been seen by so many New Yorkers since it came out it has a special place in everyone’s hearts and entertainment DNA.
So the remake updates it, sets it in the context of a Jamie Fox tilt at being elected as the NYC Mayor, brings in the brilliant young Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie and puts Cameron Daiz into the Carol Burnett role where she gets a great and gloriously evil snarl going.
The whole film is deeply NYC, the proverbial ‘orphan Annie’ with nothing who makes good is the quintessential New York story. See the trailer and make your judgements on how successfully you think this remake matches up to the 1982 original version. And remember that Sandy, the cute and loyal dog is played by Marti, a New York rescue dog who also makes it good by getting to star in this film.
