A sure sign of spring in new York is when the carousels that have shuttered for winter all open for business again.
This weekend past Staten Island’s ‘Carousel for All Children’ opened and many of the other 11 in New York are already open or will open again soon.
It is so much fun to ride on something that goes up and down and twirls around to the sound of old fashioned music when so much entertainment these days is digital.
There is incredible artistry in the carving, painting, enclosures and engineering that are part of a carousel.
English and German immigrants brought those skills with them when they came to New York and other parts of America, bringing part of the rich heritage of immigration that has made New York the great city that it is.
And it is not just the heaps of squealing children who ride the carousels, happily imagining themselves riding on proud horses or brightly colored bugs if thay are using the carousel in the Bronx Zoo. There are a lot of adults who ride them too with a nostalgic smile on their faces as they twirl around.
