The 70th anniversary of the end of the second World War has just passed and what better way to celebrate than to recreate the famous kiss between a sailor and a nurse on 14th August 1945, in Times Square that has become the iconic image of national joy at the end of a terrible war.
Tt’s become an annual event with thousands of golden oldies puckering up and demonstrating their ‘sway back kiss’ expertise.
It has long been a mystery who the sailor and nurse actually were. A recent book has painstakingly shed light on their identities, not that it has stopped other claimants putting their hands up. but the book is very convincing and the story is stirring and sad.
