About New York Granny
Writing a blog about New York City seems foolhardy given my circumstances.
I’m a 74 yr old granny who lives in Australia, while regularly visiting my grandchildren and their parents who live in New York. And therein lies my problem. I realized that without some effort on my part I was never going to have a robust feeling for my grandchildren’s everyday experience as New Yorkers.
So I started 2 years ago, stumbling around in my ignorance and confusion, determined to uncover how the lives of everyday New Yorkers, the impact of the movers, shakers and creators and the challenges and rewards of living in the best city in the world, together create this magnificent, wonderful place, New York. I plugged myself into a thick, rich and comprehensive New York newsfeed as a daily intravenous injection of New York life and set to.
What I discovered is that New Yorkers love New York with a passionate certainty about its greatness, they thrive on the challenges New York life throws up and they are constantly inspired by the great opportunities available to them in New York. Much of my writing is a devoted tribute to the wonder of New York.
As a seasoned visitor to New York I’m also only too aware of how overwhelming the city is for tourists. It is so big, busy and crowded. So as well as soaking up and commenting on the news about the rich life of lucky New York natives , I’ve also set out to demystify or decode New York sufficiently for tourists to so they can make travel plans that suit their interests and help them to not feel ‘lost’ when they first arrive.
And I want acknowledge my beautiful New York grandchildren: it is an incredible privilege to visit you as often as I can and to change from being your Aussie Granny on skype to being your New York Granny in the here and now apprecaiting every minute of being with her New York family.
