There was a time when the number of bald eagles in America was so low there was a danger of the species becoming extinct. This was in the 1970′s when the use of DDT was so widespread it was leaching into waterways, infecting fish and then the birds that eat them including the bald eagle. Once this was realized and the use of DDT was scaled back the numbers of bald eagles slowly began to grow. However it has been 100 years since they have been seen in NYC.
But now they are back in NYC, still rare and heavily protected by law for the obvious reason that they are wonderful creatures but also because the bald eagle is the symbol of American freedom. So it is known a nesting pair are setting up house on an uninhabited island off Staten Island but no more details will be released in order to provide them with maximum privacy and safety.
Watch the video and wonder at the power and majesty of these incredible predatory birds as they effortlessly scoop up salmon. NYC is very lucky to have them within its boundaries, a fantastic indication that the natural ecology of New York State and New York City is now very hospitable to all creatures laarge and small.
