Watch the first song, ‘All My Loving’ on this quite long video of all The Beatles Appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. This first song captures it all, what will be commemorated on CBS this Sunday night, Feb 9th at 8pm. Don’t forget to watch.
You get the wildly excited fans, screaming themselves hoarse because now at last their idols are here, The Beatles whose songs were already being played extensively on radio because of the demanding fan base wanted to hear their music.
There’s that clunky intro from Ed Sullivan, everything about this lovely man demonstrating he’s from a completely different era, but with the smarts to recognize the Beatles were important.
And then they’re off, effortless, carrying the music forward with the fans beside themselves and fainting with the joy of it all.
Ringo happily drumming in the background, Paul carrying most of the vocal, John balancing on the other end of the stage and George Harrison giving us a glimpse of his sublime guitar playing skills.
When you watch it 50 years later, the knowledge that 2 of these shining young men are now dead is a sadness, but the music, the sound, was revolutionary and changed music right around the world.
