The world’s most famous precision dancers are of course New York’s famed Rockettes who perform twice a year at the Radio City Music Hall. During the christmas season they put on the Christmas Spectacular and in the summer this year they will aslo stage the Rockettes New York Spectacular.
And as rehearsal time nears young women are lining up, literally, to become members of this wonderful dance troupe. First they have to have the right phsyical requirements, that is be between 5’6″ and 5′ 10 1/2″. Then they have to be proficient in tap, jazz and ballet.
And they must have excellent health. After all during Summer they will be performing in 8-10 shows a week, less that the number at Christmas, but still a taxing regime.
Current Rockettes get first crack at auditions and then some where between 200-400 young hopefulls audition for the additional 2-4 dancers taken on each season. It’s an achingly small number given how many line up hoping to be selected.
But as you can see from the videos, everyone flings themselves into the audition process with willing hearts and fast moving feet, arms and bodies, all primed to nail the famous eye-high kick. Many of these young ladies return year after year, carefully honing their expertise so that this time, they are among the lucky ones chosen.
