To understand how momentous this news is, watch John Oliver lay out the reputation of the New York’s Port Authorty Bus Terminal. In a word it’s awful, gross and horrible, including it’s rest rooms. We leave their state to your imagination. So the annoucement new rest rooms have been installed since John Oliver’s take-down is big, big news. The whole place is apparetnly getting an overhaul and not a moment too soon, but the rest rooms are the first cab off the rank.
The MTA is spending $90m on the Terminal upgrade and given the checkered history of some municipal spending we are hoping an excellent project manager and a very good designer are in the mix, making sure both good budget control and aesthetic considerations are taken into account. Well reports so far are promising. Apparently the new rest rooms are contemporary in tone with tasteful gray/silver tiles, black granite and upmarket taps etc.
But they have obviously already fallen down badly in one respect. NYC is a city in which it is a work of art to find a handy toilet and for women it is even harder. It’ve always put it down to male architects paying insufficient attention to the data to explain why there are never being enough toilets for women. Well guess what, in the new Port Authority Bus Terminal women’s toilets, there is, yes, you’ve guessed it… a line. When oh when will archtiects get it that a) there are just as many women as men and b) women take twice as long to move through a toilet as guys. Repeat after me…..
