How proud we all are of the 3 Americans including 2 servicemen, who, while on holidays and in civilian clothes, recognized an emergency when they saw it. They were on a train bound for Paris when they saw a man with a gun coming down the train aisle. Showing little heed for their safety they threw themselves on the man even though he was firing already. They brought him down and restrained him until Police boarded the train at Arras to where it had been rerouted. One of the American was cut by a box cutter as they grappled with the gunman
It’s hard to tell from the reports but apparently up to three people were injured though none fatally. The man not only had a kalashnikov he also carried 9 full magazines (300 rounds), a handgun and a box cutter. if he had not been overpowered so promptly there could have been considerable loss of life.
President Obama has praised the American and another passenger who also helped as has the French Interior Minister. It is a sad commentary on our times when people, such as these american, are so vigilant even under apparently unthreatening circumstances. We thank them for their brave actions and praise them for their courage and quick thinking.
