NYC has had a successful trial of composting going on for some time and it has been an unqualified success NYC Composting Initiative.
No the compost doesn’t smell and people have found it both easy and convenient.
But why do it? Because it will save the City $100m which can then be used for other City services to residents.
Most of the community initiatives directed towards changing our behavior, the big drink ban, the limitations on how smokes can be sold and now this are about saving money as much as they are about changing people’s quality of life.
NYC has always led the nation in many ways and so it is with this, though both San Francisco and Seattle are further along with composting.
San Francisco is saving a lot of money and generating energy for their city’s use which is something the NYC administration wants to do too. LIKE improving the life of NYC residents.
