Two Decisions by the City Administration have recently done badly in the courts. The first was a hold put on the Adminstration’s intention to test the usefulness of phone apps for people hailing yellow cabs. The ‘protagonists’ on this one are the black cabs versus the yellow cabs and the public isn’t getting a look in so far on this one.
The other is the striking out of the Adminstration’s intention to impose a limit on the size of sugary soda drinks people can buy as one way of tackling the obesity epidemic underway in NYC.
Fortunately we live in a democratic country which allows everyone to put their point of view. Some oppose the limit on the size of soda drinks because of the cost to business. Others because they see it as limiting personal freedom.
Others see it as a good start in what will be long battle in reducing obesity which not only affects many individuals but the whole health system. The way things work there will be loud debate, impassioned defence of positions and realistically change sometimes takes a long time, any kind of change. See the video clip to see what I mean about the way the debate goes.
Yes it’s messy, a lot of time gets chewed up while the debate goes on, but it’s also healthy and the best way we’ve found to deal with issues in a fair and open way. Let the debate rage on. COMMENT on the value of debating issues of social importance.
