New Yorkers are lucky. City Officials have been giving a lot of thought to how buildings and houses need to be altered to help them withstand dangerous weather of different kinds.
First up the things homeowners can do themselves. If you are replacing windows make them wind resistant, and store vulnerable equipment you own as high up as you can.
If you live in an apartment building discuss with the right person/s what is being done to avoid what happened with Hurricane Sandy, how will electricity be maintained, can the building be flood proofed etc.
Of course a lot of things will be changing in the NYC Building code so that all future buildings conform to new standards that will make conditions safer.
Things such as anchoring buildings to their foundations, relocating electrical panels and heaters high up, heavy pavers on the roof and planting around a house or buildings with wind and water resistant trees and plants.
Insurance premiums will alter if flood/wind prevention measures aren’t carried out so there’s a strong incentive to get buildings and houses fixed up. LIKE feeling safe in NYC.
