The issue of kitten killing versus a commuter holdup came up because 2 cute kitties got loose in the New York subway. If someone had said ‘you have to kill 2 cute kittens, just go and do it’ there would have been outrage
But if the question is ‘how do you weigh disrupting the life of a train load of New York passengers for 90 mins against the possibility of killing 2 stray kittens?’ the issue looks a little different.
You see despite the 90 minute holdup the kittens weren’t caught and were free for 7 hrs before being taken to safety, so the relative likelihood of them being killed either diminished or everyone just learnt to live with it in some way.
2 days later, a pit bull escaped from its yard in Queens and ran onto the tracks where it was unfortunately killed despite it’s owner trying to save it. Then it’s owner was fined for going onto the tracks in a desperate bid to save it. Go figure!
It’s worth noting that thousands of rats are killed on the subway tracks and no one cares in the slightest. So where’s the love there? We only care about domesticated animals or pets? If it’s a squirrel on the tracks what then? What do you think, let all the animals that get into the subway take their chances on getting killed or selectively help the cute ones?
