NBC might be the producer and broadcaster of SNL (Saturday Night Live) a show which goes out right across the nation, but it is a quintessential NYC show in its cast, it’s sensibility and its writers. There is an unmistakeable NYC way of seeing the world in everything that happens on the show. There is no other TV show ever that has ever so consistently attracted the best in the game. The description ‘actor on SNL’, ‘writer on SNL’ or ‘host on SNL’ is shorthand for ‘the best there is’.
Now in its 40th Season, having started being broadcasting by NBC on October 11th 1975, it is one of the most heavily awarded shows of all time with 36 Emmy Awards, 2 Peabody Awards and 3 Writers Guild of America Awards to its credit. And it has garnered the most Emmy Awards nominations of all time for any TV show.
A roll call of famous actors from John Belushi to Steve Martin, to Robert Downey Jr and Kristen Wiig have graced our screens. And alumni of the show litter other TV shows, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Myers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Without SNL graduates Hollywood and TV everywhere would limp along without those actors who bring sparkle, talent and depth to everything they do.
Each Saturday the audience of SNL waits at 11.30pm not just to see what is new but to enjoy yet again all the deeply appreciated and well known aspects of the show. Like who will be the guest host for this evening, what will happen during the ‘Weekend Update’ segment and which musical great or band will feature. But of course the numerous sketches are the highlight. See the video for some much treasured SNL highlights.
