Sad but true, New Yorkers stand a fair chance of being exposed to mosquitos, bees, wasps, chiggers, fleas, bed bugs tick and spider bites during summer.
So let’s get real. the ones you really have to worry about are mosquito and bee/wasp bites. Be extra careful at sunrise and sunset because that’s when critters are most active. It’s summer but sadly the best prevention is covering up and wearing plain, light colored clothing. Surprise, surprise, bees are drawn to clothing with florals on it.
Bees and wasps have a drone, so if you hear it or see them vamoose but slowly, movement attracts them. With mosquitos in addition to covering up wear repellant. Yup you’d prefer not to but get bitten by the wrong kind of mosquito and you can finish up with a life threatening illness. See the helpful video on how to get rid of a bee sting
Then there’s that bunch of critters that bite but the worse that happens is you get itchy. This group includes, bed bugs, chiggers and fleas. A visit to the local drugstore and the purchase of an anti itch ointment or spray will fix you up.
There’s some not very nice spiders out there in NYC. The Brown Recluse spider will give you a sting and then you’ll get a painful blister. With the Black Wwidow Spider, the sting is followed by nausea and cramps. Any symptoms like these and get to the Doctor quickly.
The other bite that needs medical attention quickly is a tick bite because of the danger of Lyme disease. The telltale sign of a tick bite is a reddish ring around the bite. You do not want Lyme disease, so go get medical help as quickly as you can. But prevention is better than cure. Cover up when going into tick infested areas, wear tick repellant and check your body and that of your pets afterwards…very thoroughly.
Being in NYC in summr is not an exercise in constantly dodging near death by insect bite. But unfortunately they are out there. If you are going into unfamiliar areas check up on what critters you might encounter. You might want to wear a tube top of loose singlet because of the heat but in some areas of NYC that is tantamount to saying come and eat me critters. Cover up and wear repellant.
