By mid September NYFW will have hit NYC and countless people will be wondering what magical wand gets waved that some beautiful young men and women get to walk down those runways and others don’t. So who in fact gets to walk the runways and who doesn’t.
Well surprizingly, if you are a model registered with a reputable NYC or international model agency, you are in good health, you meet all the physical requirements dictated by various designers your chances of walking not just once but many times is high because with over 400 shows during NYFW, with each show needing about 20 models, a lot of models are needed. But you have to get things right. If it’s a short hair season and yours is long or vice versa that’s not good and unless you have good health and stamina you won’t last so you don’t get picked.
Modelling agencies are constantly on the lookout for new talent because one of the criteria for being a model is being in the 18-25 age bracket, so new beautiful people are always coming in one end and out the other unles they have that indefinable special quality that turns them into a supermodel. And the search is worldwide. It is not just young Americans being considered, but Dutch, Russian, Hungarian or Swedish. Once on an agency’s books and you are getting bookings you will most likely be flying in for all the big fashion weeks that follow one after the other in NYC, Paris, London and Milan.
The physical requirements are that you are between 18-25 (some younger are allowed but parents must be with them all the time) be between 5’9″-6 ft if a woman and between 5’121″- 6’2″ if a man, fit a dress size of between 2-4 for women and also be buff but slim if a man, have good teeth and smooth glorious skin that can rock a backless gown if a woman or a pair of great swim trunks if a man.
Agencies seem to specialize in either scouting, that is finding new talent or booking. While undoubtedly a lot of aspiring models just come into an agncy and ask tob e considered a high number seem to be scouted, seen anywhere by a model agency person thena sked to come in and be photographed and assessed. A good agency will not ony handle booking but manage yoru career, advise on style, handle your money and develop your career. It is very much in their interests to have successful models so they work hard to make their models succeed.
Once NYFW is close like it is now, casting sessions are set up via agencies with various designers specifying what look they want. This stage is frenetic for models as they dash from one casting to another, doing usually about 8 a day. Each model takes with him or her two comp cards with photographs and all physical details and outline of experience. Normally models have to get themselves to castings. In teh video you see the people who will selct models rifling through comp cards at the beginning.
And then once picked for a show, life is very busy with fittings, preparation for a specific show which usually takes about 2 hours for hair, makeup and dressing, then the runway show itself and then on to the next one. Then many of the models in NYFW, which is the first cab off the rank for the twice yearly fashion weeks, will jet off to the European fashion shows and go through the whole thing again.
Given that modelling is an age specific activity, people who start in the fashion industry in modelling and who love the industry as a whole usally transition themselves into one of the support roles in a fashion house or a fashion magazine which then allows them to use the experience they already have and also stay in thier chosen industry.
