New York City along with Paris, London and Milan are the major fashion capitals of the world with NYC perhaps having the edge in terms of sheer volume of production and sales of high fashion. But you do not have to be Mr or Mrs Mega-Bucks to buy your share of what is produced.
In fact excellent advice for people wanting to buy high end fashion is ‘Never Pay Retail while in New York’. The reality of the relentless fashion cycle in NYC is that designers put out 2 collections per year and they have to keep pushing their wares out one door via sample sales and overstock bargains while piling all the new designer duds in the other door.
It’s one of those little secrets of NYC fashion and anyone who relentlessly combs the racks of fashion bargains will tell you that they meet plenty of fashionistas and celebs trawling for bargains with the rest of us. Who after all is going to pay full price if they can get the same thing cheaply just a little later in the season.
There are 2 main bargain high fashion streams. One is sample sales which are usually devoted to a specific designer and all the afficionados of fashion shopping in NYC keep a calendar in their heads of who sells what when. For the rest of us, the way to find out about that calendar is to check in constantly with
The second way to grab bargains is via Century 21, both the 22 Cortlandt St flagship store opposite the brand new Oculus Transit Huub in Lower Manhattan or just round the corner from it at 21 Dey Street which is the home of C21Edition where they have nothing but sample designer clothing and accessories. But rest assured there are plenty of great fashion bargains at the Cortlandt St store and they are usually cheaper too.
Now the wild success of Century 21 has not escaped the eagle eye of other high end shops in NYC struggling to keep their heads above water in the shark infested NYC retail world. So Saks, Bloomingdales and Nordstroms have all opened ‘Outlet’ stores in NYC where they sell off the designer wear they originally had at full price on their racks but which they now want to move along.
For ‘Saks Off 5th’ go to 125 E 57th Street, ‘Bloomingdales Outlet’ you will find at 2085 Broadway @ 72nd Street and ‘Nordstrom Rack’ go to 60 E 14th St @ Broadway.
Everything is for sales, men’s women’s and accessories are available at all the stores mentioned. The only trouble you will have is sticking to a budget when there is o much deicious stuff being offered for sale.
