New York is no stranger to good ice cream shops, they’re everywhere and they sell incredibly good ice cream. The thing is though, most of them have popped up in the last 5-7 years, sporting artisanal credentials and being super dedicated to adventurous flavors as though that’s a brand new thing.
But the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory at 65 Bayard Street in Chinatown has been around longer, for the last 37 years and right through its history it has produced traditonal Chinese flavors like
taro, pandan, durian, lychee, black sesame, almond cookie and red bean while everyone else was offering just vanilla and chocolate.
This is a small family own business, one of the longest running in Chinatown and it’s not a well known tourist trail at all. Though when you go to Yelp and read reviews of the place there’s a whole heap that begin withe words “When I’m back in new York City I always come here because the ice cream is so good and the flavors are so amazing.” In fact ice cream lovers around the world know about this shop and make a point of coming when they’re in town.
It’s tiny, but they have happy staff who move things along briskly so there’s not much waiting. And in addition to offering ice cream in a cup they make the most amazing ice cream cakes as well. So next time you have a birthday and you’re in NYC just call Chinatown Ice Cream FActory and order up your favorite flavor in cake form.
