There are any number of museums in NYC for kids to enjoy. Here’s 4 that are a slam dunk in the fun department for kids from little to teenage all of which engage and offer great experiential exhibits too.
THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Central Park W & 79th St.
Truly one of the most outstanding museums for kids in the whole nation, but it’s beauty for kids is that no matter what they are into there’s always going to be something they can enjoy. If they are young they will delight in the annual butterfly exhibition which is on over the holiday period. They can walk through clouds of butterflies some of which will land on them. At other times of the year there is a spider exhibition and if they get tired of spiders there is a whole hall of dinosaur skeletons to explore. Then there’s the dioramas of African animals to see….. heaps of stuff kids love.
THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF MANHATTAN
212 W 83rd St Manhattan
It has a media center, an outdoor environmental center and an early childhood center. All of it’s exhibitions are designed exclusively for kids and they change a lot. The museum staff focuses on providing experiential exhibits, see the video for a recent one. Go here to find out what current exhibitions are on Children’s Museum Exhibitions
MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS
134 West 26th St. Suite 4S
This Museum is meant for children from about 5 upwards. It aims to make mathematics fun and does. It’s quite new and a labor of love for its patrons. It’s designed to excite kid’s curiosity and wonder so any little explorer you know will love its bicycle with square wheels and other fun stuff.
THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY CHILDREN’S BOOK EXHIBITION
5th Ave @ 42nd St.
If your child is a reader they will thrill to see this children’s collection of books. They have so many exciting books displayed from the past to the present. And in this collection they hold the one and only original Winnie the Pooh. He was given to the Library so all children could see him. Naturally he has lots of admirers visiting every day.
