In this great prank video Matt Harvey who is a pitcher for The New York Mets goes out and interviews passers-by about himself. And despite his manly bulk most of the New Yorkers who he speaks to don’t recognize him. It’s very funny but it also tells us something about New Yorkers and celebs. They love them but they kind of leave them in their own space. That’s the rules of the game.
New York probably has more celebrities to the square inch than anywhere else one earth due to the coming together of arts, fashion, media, sports, film and entertainment in the city. So you don’t have to live in NYC for very long, or indeed visit it for even a short time, before you will see a celeb. You can see one walking down the street, in the subway, doing a film shoot, going into a building, eating in a restaurant, sitting with friends in a club or even down at Whole Foods stocking up on the goodies that will keep them looking svelte and healthy.
And there are rules. You don’t look at them and they don’t look at you, you don’t intrude on them any more than you would intrude on anyone else and as for those people who grab their elbow and demand a selfie shot, well they are clearly out of towners. New Yorkers generally keep a small self contained space around themselves which is a way of staying sane in a very busy and large city and that works very well indeed when there is a disturbance in the general flow of things caused by a celebrity presence. Many a celeb has been frank about the strain of being continually ‘noticed’ even by those people who are the life blood of their notoriety and New Yorkers oblige with seeming oblivion to their presence.
And now apparently George and Amal are coming to town, he to do a movie, she to fly in and out to the European Court Of Justice where she is appearing for Armenia for a matter before the court. So they can look forward to being ignored, to walking unimpeded down streets and eating quietly in restaurants without being peered at. But what’s the bet that when New Yorkers turn the corner and they’re out of sight of these mega celebs there will be a discrete arm pump and a small “Yes’!
