The trick to not being actively disliked in NYC is to blend in. And the most important blending in skill needed is the art of not stopping New Yorkers from going wherever it is they are going.
SIDEWALKS: New Yorkers walk on the right side of the sidewalk, fast, eyes down or unfocussed. DO NOT STOP THEM. So if you are walking along with everyone else and you need to consult a map, read a text or just get your bearings, step put of the flow of sidewalk traffic to do it. Think ahead, look for a quiet spot near a newspaper stand or a fire hydrant and then stop there where you will not stop anyone else when you come to a halt.
ESCALTORS: If you are travelling on the subway at rush hour know there will be New Yorkers who will be either rushing to get to work or racing to catch a train. Stand back and look at the escalators before getting on one. You will nearly always see at least one where everyone on it is moving fast, taking several steps at a time and really moving it. There will usually be another one where the traffic flow is steadier. Pick the one that suits how fast you either choose to move or can move and then step on and keep pace with everyone else.
ORDERING FOOD: You’re at a takeout shop and everyone is yelling orders at the serving staff. Stand back, look at the choices you have, make your choices then step up to order and tell the serving staff exactly what you want, fast, dithering in this situation does not earn you friends. I once had a hideous moment in a NYC Delicatessen when I dithered on sauerkraut…it was not nice.
GOING INTO AND OUT OF STORES: It’s natural when you either step into or out of a store to stop and get your bearings. But it makes for real difficulty if you do that in NYC, there’s just too many people to do it that way. If entering to leaving move briskly through the entrance and do not stop until you are are out of the flow of people moving in or out. then get your bearings.
USING YOUR METRO CARD TO ENTER THE SUBWAY: If you are a newbie subway traveller do not attempt to use your brand new Metro card until you have watched a heap of people do it and you have it down pat. First make sure you have your card out, ready in your hand so you don’t get to the entrance and then have to stop and search for it. Then holding it as you see everyone else doing it, slide the card into the slot and keep moving at the pace everyone else is moving and there you are not, safely on the other side of the barrier. Yeh!
