NYC is renowned for the variety and vibrancy of it’s nightclubs and dance clubs but all this is relatively recent. Until the 1920′s women didn’t go out nearly as often as men and nighttime outings for everyone were to shows or to the theater.
The whole idea of people getting together in a suitable place to eat, drink, socialaize, dance and flirt only started happening in the 1920′s. Then of of course Prohibition happened potentially nearly killing it off before it had even started to properly.
But in that ever resourceful NYC way nightclubs just went underground and an added touch of clandestine naughtiness meant nightclubbing during Prohibition absolutely boomed. From then on the fabulous nightclubs of the 20th Century flourished: the Cotton club, the Peppermint club Studio 54 and the Copacobana.
Today NYC is littered with great Dance clubs and Nightclubs and it would be easy to compile a list of at least 100 truly execellent ones. The modest list of 5 below consists of those most frequently appearing on all the “best Of’ lists for nightclubs and dance clubs in NYC with the Marquee the standout.
It’s as well to know that no one under the age of 21 can go to a Dance Club and everyone has to present a valid ID. The dress code is elegant casual, but casual mean formal casual not flip flops or ripped jeans. Enjoy, you won’t find better dance clubs and nightclubs anywhere in the world.
