Twice a year gorgeous models, runways, tents, photographers, make up artists, hairdressers designers and glamorous fashionistas reign supreme in NYC. But NYC’s Fashion Week is not just glitz and glamor. Each Fashion Week pulls in $900m in economic benefits for NYC. That’s more than the 2014 Super bowl, the New York Marathon and the U.S. Open Tournament. Fashion Week is BIG BIG business see CBNC.
There are 900 fashion companies in NYC which employ 180,000 people who in turn earn $11b in wages and pay $26b in taw revenue each year. Not to mention the intangible gloss that NY Fashion Week’s biannual incarnations bring to the ‘New York’ brand. NYC without Fashion Week is unimaginable. So as you see willowy lads and lasses whizz past looking fantastic in very creative duds and street photographers go crazy, feel free to see $ signs flash before your eyes.
Fashion Week is held in Febraury and September each year and normally runs for 7-9 days. International fashion collections are primarily for buyers, press and a carefully curated list of celebrities many of whom are paid to either wear the designer’s clothes or to spruke for a specific designer. Think Jennifer Lawrence and Dior.
It began in 1943 when the German occupation of Paris made the annual treck to the Paris Fashion showings rather difficult. They continued on and then in 1993 the showing of collections in NYC was formalized into one place. The whole thing is now managed by IMG which is a sports and media business headquartered in NYC. The locale has moved several times and is due to move again after this February’s Fashion Week. First they were held at Bryant Park and then they were moved to the Lincoln Center. But the last one at Lincoln Center will be in Febraury 2015 and it’s new location in September 2015 has not yet been announced.
Since staging a full runway show is very costly new and innovative ways of ‘showing’ have happened with the use of plastic static mannequins a few years back, and now live streaming of runways, direct to the public sale of designs online happening. Some designers have been opting out of the formal NYC Fashion Week setup and have found their own places to ‘show’ and that will probably keep happening more and more. As technology changes that impacts on shows. These days buyers and the press sit close to the runways instagramming as the models float past.
For members of the public there are very limited opportunitites to participate in the actual ‘showing’ process. There are some events for which tickets can be bought but one of the best ways to get the genuine Fashion Week vibe is to turn up during Fashion Week outside the tents in which clothes are shown in Lincoln Center and watch the celebrities and fashionistas arrive. The video attached shows just this process as the interviewer snags some fashionistas to get their views on what is appearing on the runways.
