THE EVOLUTION STORE: 120 Spring Street SoHo. You will not find any other store like this in NYC except for a small amount of overlap with Obscura Antiques and Oddities. It’s like going into the American Museum of Natural History and being able to buy anything you want. They have framed and unframed insects, jewelry, clothing and accessories, skulls, skeletons, anatomy models and taxidermy. You surely know someone who would just love a skull.
PEARLY RIVER MART: 477 Broadway btwn Broome and Grande Streets SoHo. 3 stories of a very varied collection of Chinese accessories, houseware and furniture. Due to close at the end of 2015, this is your last chance to enjoy their huge collection of reasoanbly priced Chinese goodies of all kinds.
THE MARKET NYC 159 Bleecker St, Greenwich Village. It’s 8,500 square feet of a designer and vintage flea market. It’s very affordable with 40 local independent artists, designers and entrepreneurs.
FORBIDDEN PLANET, Union Square, East village 823 Broadway. A specialist chain selling cult Sci-Fi books, comics, action figures, toys and collectables, a must for any of your gift giving circle who go to NYC Comic-Con.
OBSCURA ANTIQUES AND ODDITITES 207 6th Avenue in Alphabet City East Village. An antique shop with quirky furniture, paintings, skulls and taxidermy. High end but there’s plenty of lower cost gifts as well such as insect prints from $20.
PIQ Rockeffer Center 74 W 50th Street. A gift shop with strange and wonderful products from around the world. They have wonderful toys as well as quirky and bizarre goodies fro the grown ups in the family which are basically ordinary objects designed with a bit of an edge. Very addicitive.
MOMA DESIGN STORE at 81 Spring St btwn Broadway & Crosby Sts SoHo and at 44 W 53rd street. The store specialises in modern and cutting edge design in products for kids and adults. It’s hard to stop buying when you visit.
FISH EDDYS 889 Broadway at 19th Street Flatiron. They have a great selection of dishes, flatware and glasses in a range of styles and vintages. There’s always surprises here.
PLAYING MANTIS 32 N Moore Street TriBeCa. Fabulous toy store with all handmade toys, puzzles, costumes and playthings for kids. Expensive but so, so worth it. Anything you buy will last for a long time, the exact opposite of all the plastic kids stuff which falls part in 5 minutes.
PIPER VINTAGE JEWELRY 112 W 17th Street btwn 7th & 6th Avenues. A collection of rings, earrings and other jewelrt from contemporary to vintage pieces. Beautiful pieces.
