No one ever agrees on how well any particular NYC Mayor has done, but no one can fault Michael Bloomberg on the emphasis he put on bringing a much higher media and TV profile to NYC. As well he should given he’s a media mogul in his own right. And one of the ways he did it was by setting up NYC TV in 2003.
It’s main channel is WNY-TV (channel 25) and as well as NYC it goes out to Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Suffolk, Westchester and into New Jersey and Connecticut and reaches 20 million people.
Against all odds it has become successful which seems to have been a surprize to many. It is now the poster child of ‘Localism’ in TV broadcasting and other cities are aiming to copy what has been achieved.
It has focussed on lifestyle, documenatary and reality emtertainment. See the video which is a NYCTV look at “Smorgasburg’ Brooklyn’s famous weekend food market. It has shows called ‘Secrets of new York”, ‘Cool in your Code’ and ‘Eat Out in NYC’ and has an audience of 150,000+ for its shows. Of course NYC and national brands are paying attention and taking out ads on the station. As well NYCTV has now entered into a deal with NBC that will extend its programming in new directions.
