Chickens are becoming popular pets in NYC and at least part of the reason is the increasing emphasis on growing your own food as both a nutritious and socially useful thing to do. Keeping chickens does involve some costs. You have to buy your chickens, build a coop, buy feeders and watering equipment. Sure you get free eggs but they are, comparatively speaking, expensive eggs. On the other side of the ledger though, it’s great fun, especially as a family project. And chickens like scraps so keeping them is a small way to cut down on garbage. And your chickens will also kepp your garden fresh by scratching in it.
