New Yorkers can now go see, for a little while, a recreation of Jerry Seinfeld’s Upper West Side apartment from the Seinfeld Show. Which brings up the whole issue of how some TV shows are so strongly identified with NYC that it is impossible to imagine them anywhere else. Jerry’s apartment is of course a recreation because there was never exactly that apartment ever in existence, it was a set. But now you can see it, exactly as it was on the TV show, set up in Milk Studios 450 W 15th St 10am-7pm daily until June 28th.
But one of the places where the show was regularly filmed was TOM’S RESTAURANT in Morningside Heights, 2880 Broadway. In the show it was called Monk’s and it is the location for the video clip from ‘Seinfeld’ attached to this POST. Of course it is now incredibly popular with people who like hanging out in a real life place where so much of the show was filmed.
Equally popular with fans is MAGNOLIA BAKERY 401 Bleecker St on the corner of West 11th St in the West Village. It’s where the ladies of Sex and the City sat ane eat their cupcakes while dissecting the problems of dating and realtionships in NYC. These days youa re likely to hear a few snarky remarks about the quality of the cupcakes but that does not stop adoring fans from flocking to see it.
How I met Your Mother had quite a few scenes filmed in MCGEE’S BAR 240 West 55th St btwn Broadway and Eigth Ave which was changed into McLaren’s Pub in the series. Yes the Bar has done very well out of it thank you and a steady stream of fans enjoy being in it, buying HIMYM merchandise or order from the special HIMYM menu.
30 Rock was one of the longest running TV shows ever and apart from being filmed in a studio in the GE BUILDING at 30 Rockefeller Plaza the building itself was was often part of the show as well. Tina Fey, Liz Lemon in the show, meanwhile lived in an apartment at 160 Riverside Drive at West 88th St and you can look at the apartment building from the outside
For lovers of the Will and Grace show you can go from Liz Lemon’s apartment block just down the road to Will and Grace’s apartment block at 155 Riverside drive which is of course nearby. The idea of Grace meeting up with Liz Lemon is rather appealing and as you wander along Riverside Drive you can enjoy the atmospher of where these two wonderful people lived.
Finally the six cast members of Friends all lived on the fifth floor of 90 Bedford St in the West Village. The very popular cafe in the TV series Central Perk in Greenwich Village, was a completely made up locale and there is no ‘real’ equivalent. However so popular was the cafe that last year a pop-up Central Perk, was around for quite a while to commemorate the show and it did a roaring trade. To get a feel for Friends the best thing to do is just hang out in the West Village or Greenwich village and imagine
Have fun following up these TV show locations. They are of course the tip of the iceberg which is one reason it’s safer to restrict yourself to following the trail of a particular show, such as Friends or Seinfeld rather than trying to see all the TV Locations for all TV shows shot here. If would have to be a very long holiday to see them all..
