Sometimes also called ‘Bone Breaking’, Flexing is a dance form which originated in Brooklyn. Even though it’s often performed to Hip Hop music it’s not actually Hip Hop, it’s more a close cousin to a Jamaican dance style called Bruk-Up. Though it is of course part of the family of street dances that have developed all over NYC and America in the last 50-60 years, all branches of which from Hip Hop to Popping to Flexing, have highly skilled performers who make the horrendously difficult dance moves look easy.
Flexing is certainly amazing, see the first video, and be thrilled by the glding, then sharp then collapsed movements that make watching it so surprising. It now has it’s own film, see the second video, it’s own competitions and it’s own famous flex dancing stars. The film is now available on Netflix and New Yorkers can marvel at this new form of street dancing.
