The 2 big Music Festivals held in NYC are the Governors Ball (or Gov Ball), always held in June each year and Electric Zoo held on Labor Day weekend in early September. Both are held on Randalls Island and are sometimes rained out or the NYPD gets too instrusive about drug use, but both are hugely popular and Governors Ball is starting today and will go on until 7th June.
Governors Ball started in 2011 and has established a solid reputation for the range and depth of the music on display. Individuals and groups offer a huge range of music across various genres and styles including Americana, folk, pop, rock, electronic, hip hop and Indie. if you love the choice of music on offer in NYC you’ll adore Gov Ball because it’s suddenly all on in one space.
Produced by Founders Entertainment and an events company, as well as the top quality music, NYCs coolest restaurants provide pop-ups and of course food trucks are just made for an event like this. It’s a 3 day event and the producers turn on a range of other things for you to do apart from listening to and dancing to the music. But basically the music is everything and there’s huge interest in the list of performers as soon as that is made public.
Go to Governors Ball 2015 and you will see who is performing and what tickets are left. Friday is already sold out but tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday. A firm fan of NYC’s many free music outside in the summer I’m always shocked by the price of tickets but they are the same as for any big msic event around the country and cheaper than what you will pay to go see some performers.
The quality of the music is totally excellent and if you live out of town or overseas its definitely worth a trip. You’ll need to do some forward planning though because you have to line up accommodation. As you can see from the video it draws a wildly enthusiastic crowd who then proceed to enjoy themselves hugely.
