Waht makes an American City a contendor for sports capital of America? Is it the number of teams in each sport, how often those teams win, the number of fans, the number of people who participate in sport? Or is it the value of the sport francheses in that city?
At the moment no one woyuld say NYC’s elite sporting teams are winners across the board. At the moment NYC fans of various teams are just ecstatic if their team wins a game, let alone has a string of wins. Go Mets!! So on that criteria NYC is not the sports capital of America, though NYC fans live in hope.
No, what makes NYC the sports Capital of America are the same reasons NYC leads in so many areas, it’s size, the number and value of its sport franchises, its media clout and its financial clout. No other city comes close when all that is taken into account.
NYC is the only city in the US with more than one team in all five major team sports. Added to that the headquarters of every National sporting organisation in the country is in NYC. Most of the financing of sport nationwide takes place in NYC and the City has the highest concentration of media in the nation.
As well NYC has the top 4 most valuable sports franchises in the nation, NY Knicks (basketball), NY Yankees (baseball) NY Rangers (ice hockey) and NY Giants (football). Then add into the sports franchises, the U.S. Open tennis competition, the New York Marathon and the number of horse racing facilities and the depth and range of premier sporting events in the City is hugely impressive.
No matter what time of year you are in NYC there is a world class sporting event you can go and watch. But the deciding factor surely, but somewhat unromantically is that sports is big, big business and the City with the most clout in the business of sport is NYC
