At first the storyline seemed sad but straightforward. Jeter’s ankle breaks October 2012, then rehabilitation and then a triumphal but carefully managed return to the glories of 2012.
But it hasn’t worked out like that and now a new Jeter ankle break has been discovered, source unknown but probably related in some way to the prior one and a return perhaps/maybe in July?
Currently the Yankees have a far too large number of excellent players on the DL list, Jeter, Rodrigues, Granderson and Texiera but things haven’t been too bad. Wells, Boesch and Overbay have been a good support to the team.
But the assumption has been Jeter will be back and things will get way better. Well it’s seeming probably not. He’s a great player and if he can play at his best the Yankees will get a huge lift. But Jeter’s current situation is a lesson in how fragile an aging body is even when it belongs to an elite athelete and even when he’s doing everything possible to get back into top form.
Can he play shortstop again? Everyone loves this man. Everyone wants him back but how he comes back and where he plays is now very much in question. The youngsters without his experience and below his level of skill and consistency are still learning but getting better and better, especially Eduardo Nunez.
No game of elite sport is ever completely predictable and despite how awful the downs are, that’s what makes the ups so magical. Who knows yet what the Yankees ups will be in 2013. Jeter we want you back and just how you’ll come back is an open question. LIKE to see the Yankees with all it’s champions in top form.
