When does an interview with a revered New York celeb stop being probing and become offensive? Apparently when a journalist asks Robert De Niro how he avoids just acting on autopilot which is a “When did you stop beating your wife” question for sure.
Or when the same journalist asks him why the Tribeca Film Festival, which De Niro set up to help his beloved neighborhood recover from 9/11, has become overrun with bankers.
The journalist Emma Brockes said she was being respectful and polite. De Niro, who was at the end of a long day of interviews referred to negative inferences threaded all the way through her questions and then said “…and I’m not doing it” and walked out.
Of course the story then became the walk out but while some celebs are uppity and unhelpful De Niro is nt one of them. On the other hand some journos only ask ‘gotcha’ questions all the time. You know that thing about setting boundaries around other people’s disrespectful behavior? Well De Niro just did it and justifiably so.
