In the video you see a group of chefs in Southport Seaport talking about the use of old Fulton Street Fishmarket.
There’s been tension between the developer for the space and the community for a long time with the usual developer versus preservation dynamic in full play.
However there is now a cautious coming together about the old Fish Market, led by City Council Member Margaret Chin with the developer Howard Hughes Corp plus community and advocacy groups getting together to talk.
It’s an old historic area with a proud waterfront heritage and locals, traders, community groups and advocacy groups all want to preserve it.
The Howard Hughes Corp which is currently redeveloping a mall in southstreet Seaport which was badly affected by Hurrucane Sandy holds the lease on the Fish Market and has multi story development plans.
In the meantime everyone has agreed to sit down and negotiate. Lets wish them luck. it’s not just this area, if a successful consultation process is possible here it will become a useful template for future sites of this kind
