Young boys everywhere seem to love spiders. Most of the rest of us can leave them alone thank you. Though earnest spider expert Norman Platnick is eager to tell us in the video how loveable and important they are to our well being, indeed that the health of the planet depends on them.
In between his words of praise about how wonderful they re, there are cut away shots of a huge scorpion which kind of makes us want TO run away fast which somewhat defeats his purpose.
But spider experts are very well informed on their life passion and all we’ve got to go on are scary stories and not liking the way they look, so I guess we should listen to what they ahve to say.
All the current fuss about spiders is because there is a ‘Spiders Alive’ exhibition on at the American Museum of Natural History from now until Nov 2, and young and old can go along there and get up close and personal with any number of horrible looking spiders, judging by the video.
Norman Platnick explains dryly that when we see a tarantula walking across James bond’s chest in a film and our heart is in our mouth, the reality is that the worse that could happen to Mr Bond if it was really happening is he would get a little itchy.
Apparently spiders kill lots of insects that could have easily wiped out humans if the spiders weren’t on the job maintaining the balance of nature.
As a species they are over 300 million years old and at the exhhibtion there’s a spider that was trapped in resin 20 millions years ago. And there’s also a limestone fossil of a spider that is 300 million years old. So you’ll see some dead examples as well as the scarily alive ones.
You can see a Black Widow spider at the exhibition but only 1% of spiders from 43,000 documented species are venomous so on the whole we shouldn’t go around thinking that all spiders can kill us becuse only a very small number can do that and the Black Widow is one of them.
So take along all the small male and female spider lovers you know to see these creppy crawlies and keep telling yourself they are not dangerous, no matter how big and hairy they are, well mostly they’re not dangerous, just watch out for that Black Widow one.
