When the Martin Scorsese film ‘Gangs of New York’ was released in 2003, it immediately resonated with New Yorkers who were deeply familiar with the locales of the film, even though things had changed a bit since the 19th Century.
These days mention ‘Five Points’ and most New Yorkers will know where you mean even though the area is now part of Chinatown and not marked on a map.
The story of the New York gangs of that time is so broad and so important in understanding present day New York that it’s welcome news that Scorsese and Miramax are going to make a television serial that takes in a broader and deeper sweep of this era in New York
It is to be hoped that Scorsese with a broader canvas at his disposal will pay more attention to other areas in New York where gangs ran the joint.
For instance the history of the White Hand Gang in Brooklyn deserves attention. This gang had a running battle with Sicilian Black Hand Gang while controlling the waterfront and the boss of which was finally gunned down, some say by Al Capone.
Corruption, romance, hard times and mutual support were all parts of the New York Gang experience. Go Scorsese go! COMMENT on what you want from this new TV series. LIKE the ragged, hard fought history of NYC.
