It’s spring and the garden needs attention. Except when it’s New York that garden is pretty big. Never mind, New York Cares has 4000 volunteers out looking after those many smaller gardens that make up the big garden of NYC.
There are 68 gardens, playgrounds and waterfronts in all 5 boroughs to be cared for, to be pruned, weeded and replanted as needed.
In 1980 some friends decided they wanted to help the city with these tasks and others that benefitted the people who live in NYC and so they set up New York Cares.
Now it is the city’s largest volutneer management program that helps New Yorkers far and wide. Go here to find out about them and how to vulunteer if you would like to New York Cares
Helping others is very rewarding and volunteers easily get back more than they put in. There’s the sense of community, of being with like minded people doing what makes the heart sing.
Volunteering above all helps us make new friends, learn unexpected new skills and have the enormous pleasure of giving. It is so worth doing. And in a place like New York where there are so many different types of volunteering opportunities you can always find somethign which really fits what’s important to you.
