Each year engineering students from around the nation pit themselves against each other in the Concrete Canoe competition. See the video of the 2012 races to get the idea.
Engineering students at the City College of New York are New York’s entrants this year as they have been for almost 50 years.
The students build the canoes themselves but they need an expert canoeist to coach them in the difficult art of paddling competitively.
So Frisco Postma, expert paddler from Brooklyn, has been coaching them in the finer points of how to win their races.
He needed to get them into good shape before hand because none of them were exactly at the peak of physical fitness, but they have exercised hard and they stand an excellent chance at the national competitions.
You’re right of you think building a non sinkable canoe is a challenge but New York’s engineering students have been up to the task of inventing a concrete mixture that is light but durable. Good luck City College of New York hope you win. At the very least it is obviously great fun.
