You will have no shortage of places you can take your children in New York but what you select will depend on your children’s age and interests.
A current Broadway show like ‘Matilda’ would be great for kids 10+ but unsuitable for younger children because it deals with children being treated unfairly.
Likewise a visit to the ballet or a football or baseball game would be amazing for kids above 5 but will test the level of concentration of younger children and wouldn’t be suitable for toddlers.
While New York is a hugely congested urban environment which presents certain types of challenges for family groups, don’t think there is nowhere for kids to run around, especially young toddlers that both need space and safety..
New York has wonderful parks and they are everywhere. Central Park is of course the main one and whether you go there or to a smaller park you will quickly discover one of the truths of NYC.
In order to make up for the limited amount of green space available to children, all NYC parks are chock a block with terrific kids playgrounds, with all the slides, climbing walls and equipment and wonderful carousels you and your children can desire. There is no shortage of things to climb, jump on and experience in New York parks and the ground children play on in these playgrounds is all covered in springy, hard wearing but soft rubber which is very kind to childhood tumbles and falls.
In hot weather there are water themed children’s park like the ones fronting the Hudson River with lots of water based activities designed to help hot kids cool down and enjoy themselves.
There is of course the natural History Museum that is magnet for young boys and girls because of its huge dinosaur skeletons and a terrific hall full of wild stuffed animals. And there is also the New York Hall of Science with lots of interactive science exhibits to tempt the imagination and skill of young visitors.
One thing you will need regular access to if you have young kids in tow and you are away from where you are travelling is toilets. Sadly New York is not incredibly well equipped. So plan your routes and check what is available. All large stores and food chains such as Starbucks and Burger King will have toilets but it there are always waiting lines so planning ahead is essential. There are apps available to help you locate toilets and there are resources posts with them listed and along with a bunch of sites that will help you decide what activities will most suit your younger family members.
