The King is dead, Long live the King!! Or in this case Trevor Noah who is taking over from Jon Stewart on September 28th. New Yorkers have got used to Jon Stewart’s angst at the craziness of American politics. Noah by comparison comes from South Africa and grew up under Aparthied. So with such a non New York background what does he bring to ‘The Daily show’? though of course as a NYC immigrant he stands within what has made the City great.
The richness of his ethnic and cultural background is central to his stand-up and it gives him a chance to riff on race, gender, power and the concept of belonging which in his case is a unique concept. See the video and enjoy, he is very, very, good.
However he is the consumamte stand-up performers operating well within the confines of this genre of comedy, which for all it’s supposed improvisational character is a precise from of conversation with an audience. so it will be interesting to see how he translates that into a daily TV show.
He’s unafraid to take ethical stances and clearly within Stewart’s territory. I’m pretty sure we can expect to be amused, irritated and hugely entertained. Bring it on Trevor Noah, we can’t wait.
