Go to a smaller city and these shops probably wouldn’t exist but in New York the fabulous is always available and that applies to shops selling strange natural history relics or just plain strange: a glass eye anyone?
First up Evolution in Soho, the biggest and most prestigious of these types of shops with a heavy emphasis on natural history objects such as dead critters, rocks, shells, stuffed exotic animals, skeletons, you name it. Highly regarded for the quality of what it offers.
Next up Obscura in the East village, small and crowded and made famous in the TV show Oddities, more varied than Evolution Store, but still the dead critters plus a wide range of the just plain curious. Also the prices vary quite a bit so people can find something to fit within their budget.
Finally a newcomer Creel and Gow in the Upper East Side, same range as Obscura but more upmarket and pricier and their collection of the beautiful, strange and odd is very carefully curated and set out. Evolution store and Obscura have curated collections, but both shops are crowded, though that can be fun too. LIKE how New York offers everything.
