It is illegal to fly drones anywhere in NYC but that is not stopping either private individuals or businesses doing it. Apparently theya re very popular in real estate circles.

People who love drones say such fears are just products of people’s fertile imaginations but unrestricted use of all sorts of things has been banned because of risks. It’s not fanciful to imagine a drone equipped with sound detection hovering outside an office window 20 stories up and recording an important meeting going on inside a nearby room. Or of a drone suddenly deprived of power dropping out of the skies onto someone’s head.
There is a boom currently in people buying flying cameras so we can assume a lot of people are either already flying drones or getting ready to to fly one.
Time for the City Admin and Mayor De Balsio to set some ground rules and stop the fairly obvious abuses that can result from their use.
