How could this video not go viral combining as it does so many iconic New York pre-occupations. Rats, the subway, pizza, the struggle to survive, the bold play for a winner, the reality check!
Is there another city on earth where rats play such a pivotal role in the city’s psyche? NYC subways, love ‘em, hate ‘em, can’t live without ‘em. And pizza, the cheap easy solace of a hot thin slice when eating anything else is too much bother.
But it’s the wild guesses by everyone on the rat’s motivations that cut to the chase of New Yorkers desire to succeed coupled with ‘Is it all worth it” that have been most revealing. It’s easy to be amazed at his/her early commitment to getting that pizza home. But then why give up? An instinctive understanding that notice is being paid or a sober assessment that navigating that huge bit of pizza, is in rat terms, not worth the huge effort. Or is it, as one pundit opined, a final sensible decision to not over indulge on carbohydrates and opting for that vegan alternative of the squashed banana down on the railway tracks.
