The number of pedestrians killed in New York is rising slowly but steadily.
If things keep going the way they did in January this year then by the end of the year there will have been over 200 pedestrians killed.
The NYPD has responded by coming down hard on speeding drivers.
But jaywalkers are also being targetted. The NYPD is ticketing jaywalkers who don’t pay heed to pedestrian laws.
Doing the right thing means crossing at clearly marked pedestrian crossings and paying attention to traffic signals.
Jaywalking is almost cultural tradition in New York so it is going to be interesting to see how the instinct to do what has always been done plays out against a determined effort by the NYPD to stop both speeding cars and jaywalking.
