NYV has a very, very proud history of campaigning for the liberty and equality of all. And now it’s Martin Luther Kind Day, with the holiday to commemorate him this coming weekend, so let’s remember the alliance between MLK and New Yorkers in Civil Rights Battles
So while most of Martin Luther King’s famous deeds of leadership in the battle for rights for blacks in America took place in places like Montgomery, Selma and Washington his efforts were at all times underpinned by the personal, financial and practical support of his new York supporters. New yorkers like Harry Belafonte gave his strong personal support and his millions to support MLK in every posible way. As did so many African-American New Yorkers as well.
And New York unions, inspired by King’s oratory and his principles gave much of the logistical and practical support which underpinned the successful Washington march at which MLK gave his famous ‘I have a Dream’ speech.
Many prominent New Yorkers as well as 1,000′s of ordinary New Yorkers raised money and provided vocal and written support to his civil rights campaign.
This coming Monday is MLK day and many New Yorkers will enjoy a long weekend as a result. While they do they can celebrate the efforts of past and present New Yorkers to achieve equality for all people.
