The reviews of ‘Matilda’ which has just arrived on Broadway via London are all couched in superlatives.
The character of the lead, young Matilda is obviously the star of the show, because she is the gutsy kid that rises above dysfunctional parents and a horrendous teacher to head resolutely towards a future befitting her extraordinary talents armed with a sure sense of her own worth. She is the heroine for today no doubt about it
But the setting through which her story is told is equally bewitching.
The score by Australian Tim Minchin gets raves as does the book by Dennis Kelly and the actors, children and adults alike shine throughout.
The only recent production it gets compared to is “The Lion King’ because it has the inventiveness and eye popping wonder of that production translated into a very British tale with universal appeal.
Obviously here for a long, long run and likely recipient of numerous Tony awards, we can all plan ahead to go see it and marvel at a wonderful musical. LIKE fabulous musicals.
