If you like olive oil you’re in luck. A just published longitudinal study of the diet followed in Mediterranean countries has found it is very heart friendly and cuts the likelihood of heart disease, strokes etc by 30%.
This diet has always had a good reputation but this well conducted study over 7 years has surprised even it’s advocates by how successful the study was.
The doctors conducting it ended up puttinG themselves on it, the results were that good. And people didn’t gain weight on it, just health.
So what do you eat? High intake of veggies, fruit, nuts, legumes, fish and olive oil. Low intake of meat, meat products and moderate amount of wine. Oh and ‘black’ chocolate is in the mix. YUM.
Here’s a list of Mediterranean Restaurants in NYC that have got good reviews. Kashkaval, Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown West; Picholine, Upper West Side; Hummus Kitchen, Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown West, Theater District; Boulud Sud, Upper West Side; and Lezette Mediterranean Cucina, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea and Midtown West. there’s heaps more I just picked out some well reviewed ones.
Mediterranean food really is delicious. How wonderful that something most of us like anyway is actually good for us. Go chow down and get healthy. LIKE a healthy heart.
