Somehwere in the huge group of NYPD rookies graduating in July this year at the Madison Square Garden (see video) was one man who is undoubtedly the oldest rookie of all, a 43 year old vet from Texas who has taken a long route to fulfilling his dream of being a New York cop.
Donovan Burch served 23 years with the US army and while there he had the good fortune to meeT up with a group OF NYPD officers who came over to Iraq to help train local police. One of them became a special friend and mentor to Donovan. His name is Justin Lenz and he was already an experienced NYPD officer by the time he landed in Iraq.
When Donovan decided it was time for him to resign from the army after his 23 years service he also made another momentous decision. He moved his family from Waynesboro Mississippi to New York so he could fulfill his long held ambition to be a cop. And it helped that his friend Justin Lentz was already here and by now was the Commanding officer of the 101st precinct in Far Rockaway.
When it was time for him to get his shield he was even able to get his old friends’s shield No 25731 which he now wears proudly. Burch has now graduated and has been posted to the 25th Precinct in Harlem. By now he’s 43 and get gets a lot of good antured ribbing because he’s certainly the oldest rookie.
